What is a Wi-Fi HOTSpot?

An increasingly popular way to work and play on the go, hotspots provide wireless Internet access service, for free or for a fee, from a wide variety of public meeting areas, including coffee shops and airport lounges. There are currently thousands of hotspots worldwide and new access points are being added daily to provide commuters with Internet browsing, e-mail, online gaming and other web related facilities.

How do I use a Wi-Fi HOTSpot?

To use these hotspots, customers with Wi-Fi equipment such as Laptops, PDAs, etc can connect with a wireless LAN base station transmitting in a nearby location. Wi-Fi-enabled notebooks can send and receive data indoors and out - anywhere within a certain range.

Who provides Wi-Fi HOTSpots?

Any public business can benefit from deploying hotspots.  Laptop manufacturers such as Hewlett Packard, Sony, Dell, Toshiba and IBM are already building Wi-Fi radios into the motherboards of many of their machines, rapidly making the Wi-Fi radio a standard computer component similar to the way the 56k modem is standard today.
